Development of Housing Schemes on ECD will be faster than EBD- Rodrigues

Housing Minister Susan Rodrigues inspects an area plan with along with an engineer

Given the landscape of the East Coast Demerara, the Ministry of Housing and its engineers anticipate that the development of new housing schemes along that part of the country will be developed faster and easier than what was obtained on the East Bank previously.

According to Minister within the Housing Ministry Susan Rodrigues during a site visit Thursday afternoon to three major sites identified for industrial and housing developments.

“If you look at the lands on the East Coast here, you can see it’s higher than on the East Bank so we expect the infrastructure works here to go more smoothly and we can deliver these schemes even faster than we did previously on the East Bank in the past” Minister Rodrigues noted.

In most instances, new housing schemes opened, especially along the East Coast Demerara, were done in areas where sugar was previously cultivated. That in itself posed a challenge to the phase of land clearing and preparation to commence infrastructural works for new housing schemes, this was largely due to the swampy nature of the lands coupled with existing canals and trenches which ran through those lands.

On Thursday, Minster Rodrigues received a guided tour by an engineer from the ministry as they examined the ongoing works at Foulis, Hope Low Land, and the Industrial site at Enmore, East Coast Demerara.

“From August 2020 to now, we have spent GYD $24 billion dollars on the East Coast Demerara and what is important to note is that the development to take place on the East Coast will mirror that of the East Bank” the minister stated.

Residents, commuters and anyone who lives do business on the East Coast Demerara can expect ease in commute very soon as several roads are expected to be built which will feed into the soon-to-be upgraded and widened Aubrey Barker Road in South Georgetown.

Based on blueprints for road networks within Region 4, the East Coast will soon be able to link and connect with Georgetown and East Bank Demerara all the way to Timehri.
