GPL outlines 2030 expansion plan at CARILEC conference

Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has outlined its vision for a smarter and more resilient electricity network as it participated in the opening of the CARILEC Engineering and Procurement Conference and Exhibition last evening at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown.
The regional conference brought together energy leaders, utility representatives, technical experts and industry partners to discuss the future of the Caribbean’s energy sector.
During the opening ceremony, Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, presented the company’s 2030 Expansion Plan, highlighting efforts to modernise Guyana’s electricity network through the development of a smart grid, a modern control centre, expanded power generation capacity, and major upgrades to the transmission and distribution system.
According to GPL, the initiatives are aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply while meeting the country’s rapidly growing demand for power.
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips also addressed the conference, outlining Guyana’s evolving energy landscape and highlighting the role of the Gas-to-Energy Project in strengthening the country’s energy security, supporting economic growth and improving long-term sustainability.
CARILEC Executive Director Dr. Cletus Bertin provided an overview of the organisation, noting that it serves 30 member countries by promoting collaboration, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building among Caribbean utilities.
Industry representatives also addressed the conference, including Aggreko Business Development Manager Nigel Hosein, who stressed that modernising electricity networks requires strategic planning, effective procurement and reliable technology to build resilient power systems.
GPL said its participation reflects the company’s continued commitment to regional collaboration, innovation and the development of modern energy solutions. The conference also provided an opportunity for the utility to engage with regional and international partners as it advances plans to strengthen Guyana’s national grid and improve electricity service across the country.
