$48M WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM FOR REG 8

Approximately 232 residents of Kamana, located in the North Pakaraimas, Region 8, are poised to benefit from a $48M investment in a water supply system.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, formally inaugurated the facility today after a brief community gathering. Alongside the Minister were Guyana Water Inc. Hinterland Service Director, Ramchand Jailall, regional personnel, and project contractor Ramesh Kissoon of R. Kissoon Contracting Services.

During the meeting, Minister Croal updated residents on development plans for the region outlined in the 2024 National Budget. A substantial allocation of $1.5 billion has been designated to enhance water services in hinterland regions, including the completion of two new wells in Region 8, one in Mahdia and another in Campbell Town.

In his address, Minister Croal urged residents to actively participate in preserving the new facility. Acknowledging the community’s inland location, plans were discussed to provide residents with training in basic maintenance to ensure the facility’s longevity.

The Kamana project encompassed drilling a potable water well to a depth of 120 meters, laying 3000 meters of 50mm (2”) PVC pipes, installing 1000 meters of 19mm (3/4”) PVC pipes with 50 service connections, constructing a concrete slab, setting up storage tanks, and implementing a photovoltaic pumping system and perimeter fence.

Before this endeavor, the community relied on a small spring source for water, which fell short of meeting the population’s needs. Additionally, R. Kissoon Contracting Services generously donated sporting gear to the community, further enriching their well-being.
