US First Lady Melania Trump has strongly rejected allegations linking her to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, describing the claims as “lies” and calling on Congress to convene public hearings for victims to testify.
In rare and direct remarks from the White House on Thursday, Trump sought to distance herself from Epstein, while advocating for greater attention to those affected by his crimes. Her comments come as public discussion surrounding Epstein had begun to wane.
“I’ve never been friends with Epstein. Donald and I were invited to the same parties as Epstein from time to time, since overlapping in social circles is common in New York City and Palm Beach,” she told reporters. “To be clear, I never had a relationship with Epstein or his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.”
The First Lady’s call for congressional hearings appeared to diverge from the broader messaging of the administration led by Donald Trump, which has sought to downplay renewed focus on Epstein and his victims.
Her remarks reportedly caught some White House officials off guard, prompting speculation about the timing of the statement. However, individuals close to the First Lady indicated that she has grown increasingly frustrated with persistent online speculation about her alleged connections to Epstein.
Responding to questions about why she chose to speak out now, her office pointed to comments made by senior adviser Marc Beckman, who stated that the First Lady had reached a breaking point.
“Enough is enough. The lies must stop. It is time for the public and media to focus on her incredible achievements as First Lady,” Beckman said.
