GPL to boost Bartica power supply with new generator

June 16 2026
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is set to increase electricity generation capacity in Bartica, Region Seven, with the installation of a new 2.2-megawatt generating set that is expected to be commissioned by the end of July 2026.
According to GPL, the new Cummins Generating Set #4 forms part of ongoing efforts to improve electricity reliability and meet the growing demand for power in Bartica and surrounding communities.
Bartica currently has a generation capacity of 5.3 megawatts, while peak electricity demand is approximately 3 megawatts. The addition of the new unit will significantly increase available capacity, providing greater reserve power and enhancing the stability and reliability of the electricity network.
GPL said the investment will support continued residential, commercial and industrial growth in the township, while strengthening its ability to meet future demand.
The utility company also highlighted that Bartica benefits from a 1.5-megawatt solar farm, which is part of its broader strategy to diversify Guyana’s energy mix through renewable energy integration. The combination of thermal generation and solar power is expected to contribute to a more resilient and efficient electricity supply system in the region.
GPL noted that the addition of the new generating set underscores its commitment to expanding and modernising electricity infrastructure to support economic development in hinterland communities.
The company said it remains focused on delivering safe, reliable and efficient electricity services to customers across Guyana.
