Min Parag Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Regional Development

January 30 2025 –  The government remains steadfast in its commitment to economic and regional development, despite political challenges, these were sentiments echoed by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag speaking during the 2025 budget debates in the National Assembly on Wednesday, where she assured that national development will continue under the new budget, prioritizing the needs of the people over politics.

She criticized the APNU+AFC coalition for condemning the budget while having a history of economic mismanagement. Challenging the opposition, she urged them to “come with clean hands” when accusing the government of stagnation.

The minister also accused the opposition of neglecting hinterland development, alleging that billions were misused to benefit party members rather than citizens.

In contrast, she highlighted the current PPP/C government’s tangible efforts, including part-time job programmes and community development initiatives across all regions, particularly in previously underserved areas.

Major Investments in Local Development

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has been allocated billions to enhance livelihoods and advance development strategies.

A total of $13.2 billion has been earmarked for improving solid waste management across the country, with plans to construct additional market areas and landfill sites, adding to the 13 already in operation.

Additionally, significant investments are being made to upgrade health centres and schools, further improving access to essential services.

The government is also working to strengthen the regional system, ensuring that citizens can conveniently access government services through their Neighbourhood Democratic Councils.

With these initiatives in place, Minister Parag reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering nationwide growth and improving the lives of all Guyanese.

Empowering Citizens Through Economic Initiatives

The minister highlighted the success of the government’s part-time worker initiative, which has provided opportunities for 15,283 individuals, including 11,000 women, to improve their financial stability.

These programmes have enabled women to leave abusive situations and care for sick family members, and to expand these opportunities further, the government has allocated $12.7 billion towards part-time job programmes.

“This government has invested billions annually to ensure that these workers are not only earning a living but are part of an inclusive economic structure that values their contributions,” Minister Parag stated.
