September 29, 2025 – Minister of Education, the Honourable Sonia Parag, on Saturday visited the construction site of Guyana’s first dedicated school for the deaf at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, where she underscored the importance of timely and high-quality delivery of the landmark project.

During her engagement with the contractor, Minister Parag emphasized that the facility’s completion is a national priority, noting that it must stand as a model of excellence for inclusive education. She expressed confidence that the project, which is scheduled for completion in November 2025, will be delivered on time, and assured that the Ministry will continue to closely monitor progress until the school officially opens its doors.

The $194,472,570 project is being executed by Superior Supplies and General Construction and remains on track for completion.

Once completed, the school will accommodate 30 deaf learners and serve as a resource hub for deaf youth, offering programs to support inclusivity, personal growth, and community engagement.

Minister Parag highlighted that the initiative represents a transformational milestone in Guyana’s education sector, fulfilling the government’s commitment to creating equitable and empowering spaces for all learners.

She was accompanied on the site visit by Permanent Secretary Ms. Shanielle Hoosein-Outar, Assistant Chief Education Officer for Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Dr. Keon Cheung, and Head of Buildings, Mr. Gerron Parker.
