Linden Man Fined for Assaulting Girlfriend at Kingston Seawall

A Linden man was on Tuesday fined $35,000 for assaulting his now ex-girlfriend during an altercation at the Kingston Seawall, Georgetown.
Devon Reid, an operator residing at 1225 Central Amelia’s Ward, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where the charge was read to him.
It is alleged that on August 10 at the Kingston Seawall, he assaulted Orpha Persaud.

He told the court that he and Persaud, who were in a relationship, had an argument over a domestic issue, which escalated into a “scramble.”
According to him, Persaud grabbed his jersey, and he, in turn, grabbed hers, leading to an exchange of words. He denied physically assaulting her.
However, when given an opportunity to speak, Persaud told the court she had been sitting in the front passenger seat of a car at the seawall with her children when Reid approached and asked her for $60,000.
She said she told him she did not have the money to give him. Persaud alleged that Reid reached into the vehicle, took her phone, and forcibly pulled her out.
“He started to slap and cuff me in my face”, the woman said.
She said after persons, including her brother, intervened to separate them, she told Reid their relationship was over and asked him to move out of her home.
Persaud claimed that Reid, after hearing that, then grabbed her again and began beating her on the seawall.
The prosecution’s case was that Reid slapped and cuffed the woman to her face during the incident. Reed maintained he never hit her, suggesting that if she was struck, it may have been accidental while others were parting them.
Persaud told the court that she and Reid had purchased a car together, for which she paid $500,000 as a down payment. She said the car was registered in both their names, but was later changed to his name only despite her contribution.
She informed the court that she needed her money back and that his employer had promised to repay her on Tuesday if she dropped the case against him. She then told the court that she no longer wants to proceed with the case.
However, Magistrate Azore asked Reid if he would agree to stay away from the woman and have no further contact with her. Reid agreed. The prosecutor confirmed that he had no previous convictions.
He was later fined $35,000, with the court ordering him to keep away from Persaud.
