CANU Seizes Over 1,600 Kilogrammes of Narcotics in 2025

October 9 2025
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has so far seized a total of 112 kilogrammes of cocaine and 1,500 kilogrammes of marijuana for 2025, according to Head of CANU, James Singh.
Singh shared the update as part of the Unit’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within and beyond Guyana’s borders.
Speaking to reporters earlier today at the launch of Guyana’s National Early Warning System (EWS) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the director noted that most of the illegal drugs entering Guyana originate from Venezuela, adding that traffickers have a clear motive to threaten and intimidate CANU officers in order to keep their operations running smoothly.
“They would be the ones who have a vested interest in intimidating us as they normally do to allow the drugs to move freely,” Singh said.
The CANU Head also reminded that Guyana’s geographic location makes it a natural transshipment point for narcotics destined for other territories. To counter this, the Unit continues to work closely with international counterparts to intercept shipments before they leave the country.
Singh emphasized that CANU remains committed to maintaining vigilance and strengthening its enforcement capabilities amid persistent threats from transnational criminal networks.
