Guyana’s IICA Director General Candidate Meets with AGRI Minister

June 12, 2025 —

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, who also serves as Chairman of the Special Ministerial Task Force advancing the CARICOM agriculture agenda, recently met with Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, Guyana’s official candidate for the post of Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

The courtesy call provided an opportunity for discussions surrounding CARICOM’s agri-food system priorities and the critical role IICA continues to play across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Minister Mustapha reaffirmed the region’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development and praised the institute’s ongoing technical support in strengthening the food and agriculture sector.

Dr. Ibrahim, a seasoned agricultural development expert, previously served as Director General of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) and as Director of Technical Cooperation at IICA.

With a global reputation for leadership in sustainable agriculture, he aims to enhance the region’s agricultural resilience and competitiveness, boost market access, and promote integrated health and environmental strategies through the One Health approach.

His candidacy aligns with Guyana’s broader push for innovation and sustainability within the regional agriculture framework, as CARICOM works toward reducing its food import bill by 25% by 2025 and building climate-smart, self-sufficient agri-food systems.
