AGRI Min engages East Coast livestock farmers on production challenges

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha met with livestock farmers from communities along the East Coast of Demerara as the Ministry continues its efforts to address challenges affecting the sector and support increased local production.

During the engagement, farmers raised concerns about the availability and accessibility of suitable pasture lands for cattle, drainage and irrigation challenges affecting agricultural areas, and the need for suitable facilities or designated areas where fishers and farmers can safely and hygienically dry fish.

Farmers also stressed the importance of keeping agricultural lands productive and accessible as they seek to expand operations and meet growing demand for locally produced meat, milk and other agricultural products.

Mustapha said the concerns raised will be immediately examined by the Ministry’s relevant technical agencies, with attention being given to identifying practical interventions that can be implemented in the shortest possible time.

Particular focus will be placed on pasture availability and the rehabilitation and maintenance of drainage and irrigation infrastructure, which are critical to livestock and agricultural production.

The Minister said concerns falling outside the Ministry of Agriculture’s direct mandate will be brought to the attention of the relevant Cabinet colleagues and agencies to facilitate a coordinated response.

He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with farmers and other stakeholders to remove constraints affecting production and create conditions for the livestock sector to expand.

The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing farmer-outreach programme, which is aimed at strengthening communication with producers, addressing challenges affecting their livelihoods and ensuring that agricultural policies and interventions result in practical support for farmers across the country.
