$58.5M Agro-processing facility commissioned at Canal No. One

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Saturday reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to advancing Guyana’s agro-processing sector, as he delivered remarks at the commissioning of a new facility in Canal Number One Polder, West Bank Demerara.
The $58.5 million agro-processing facility is aimed at boosting value-added production and expanding opportunities for farmers within the region.
During his address, Minister Mustapha said Guyana has historically focused on the production and export of raw agricultural commodities, a trend that has limited farmers’ earning potential over the years. He explained that the seasonal nature of crops, coupled with perishability and fluctuating market demand, has often prevented farmers from maximising returns.
However, he noted that the Government is actively working to address these challenges through targeted investments in agro-processing and preservation.
The Minister pointed out that the facility was strategically established in Canal Number One, a community widely regarded as one of the most productive agricultural areas in Region Three.
“For too long, our farmers and consumers have been confined to the fresh produce market. With many crops being seasonal, there has always been a gap when it comes to preservation and value addition. This facility will help bridge that gap,” he stated.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernise the agriculture sector and create sustainable economic opportunities for farming communities.
