Jagdeo urges compliance with Health Ministry's protocols on COVID-19

Opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has called on all Guyanese to follow the protocols and advisories from the Ministry of Public Health in order to remain safe and minimize the risks of contracting the coronavirus.

Jagdeo made the comment following an engagement with the press and leaders of Caricom at his Church Street Office Wednesday evening.

“I would like to urge all Guyanese to be careful and to observe all the protocols and advisories put out by our Ministry of Health” Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo noted.

He stressed that Guyanese should take all necessary precautions in order to contain any spread of the very dangerous virus.

Asked in this is now an opportunity for the two sides (Opposition and Government) to work together in ensuring that there is a collaborative and cohesive approached, Jagdeo said that there is no need for political collaboration but rather, the medical people should be allowed to take charge of this process as it remains something which has to be handled by the technical people.

“I think the medical professionals should be in charge of the process because the last thing you need is politicians telling medical people what to do, this does not require political intervention” Jagdeo stressed.

Guyana confirmed its first case of the COVID-19 on Wednesday after a woman who checked into the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital died.

Samples that were taken from her remains confirmed that she died from the virus. The development did send persons in panic mode but President David Granger has since called on the nation to remain calm and to avoid public gathering and non-essential travels.

The Ministry of Public Health is monitoring the situation.
