Guyana Launches National Mineral Mapping Programme

October 1 2025 – The Ministry of Natural Resources today launched its national mineral mapping programme at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), is being executed with technical support from U.S.-based Global Venture Consulting under a contract valued at approximately US$1.8 million.
The programme will prioritize gold and other commercially significant minerals, while also assessing the country’s potential for critical resources such as lithium. It will employ a combination of geochemical sampling, airborne and ground-based geophysical surveys, and digital integration to create detailed mineral occurrence maps for priority districts.

A major component of the project is capacity building. Global Venture Consulting has already begun training GGMC staff in advanced techniques, with the goal of ensuring local experts can eventually manage and sustain the mapping effort independently.
Once the contracted phase concludes, GGMC will be tasked with continuing the programme and maintaining updated datasets.
Field surveys and sample collection are set to begin immediately, with interim maps to be published as data is validated. Officials described the effort as the start of a multi-year process to reshape Guyana’s mining landscape and enhance its reputation as a responsible destination for mineral investment.
Subject Minister Vickram Bharrat, speaking at the launch, stressed the importance of modernizing Guyana’s mineral datasets, which have not been comprehensively updated for decades.
Minister Bharrat emphasized the importance of initiating Guyana’s mineral inventory this year, noting that the resulting maps and datasets would provide both small-scale and large investors with essential tools to identify opportunities while reducing initial exploration costs.
