Over 2,000 Fisherfolk receive Government relief cheques

More than 2,000 fisherfolk from Region Four benefited on Monday as the Government of Guyana continued its nationwide relief programme for those in the fisheries sector.

The cheques were distributed by Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, during outreach exercises held at the Everest Ground in Georgetown, as well as in Lusignan and Unity on the East Coast of Demerara.

The initiative forms part of a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali and represents a total government investment of approximately $1.05 billion.

Under the programme, approximately 7,000 fisherfolk across the country are expected to receive grants of $150,000 each.

Addressing fisherfolk at the distribution, Minister Mustapha noted that this marks the second occasion on which the government has provided direct grant assistance to those in the sector.

He emphasised that the support extends beyond cash relief, pointing to ongoing investments aimed at strengthening and modernising the fisheries industry.

The Agriculture Minister also highlighted plans to expand opportunities for fisherfolk through training and value-added initiatives. He said efforts are underway to equip stakeholders with skills to diversify their income and improve sustainability within the sector.

“While we are doing that, we are working to train fisherfolk to incorporate value-added opportunities. In the coming months, a number of opportunities will become available to you. We will also be establishing seafood processing plants to produce value-added commodities,” Minister Mustapha said.

The government has indicated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance livelihoods and build resilience within Guyana’s fisheries sector.
