A 57-year-old former pump attendant was handed on a life sentence on Tuesday for the 2020 killing of another man at Zorg and Johanna Cecilia, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Initially indicted for the capital offence of murder, Nankishore Persaud formerly of Anna Regina Housing Scheme, Region Two was found guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter by a mixed 12-member jury on March 21.
The jury found that on February 26, 2020, he unlawfully killed 35-year-old Arvin Tulsi Mayhilall. The killer must serve at least 25 years before he is eligible for parole.
Persaud had been on trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Essequibo High Court. After the jury returned the guilty verdict, the Judge had further remanded Persaud to prison, deferring his sentencing hearing until Tuesday.
State Counsel Taniesha Saygon presented the prosecution’s case while Attorney-at-Law Leslie Sobers represented Persaud.
On the day in question, at around 18:00 hrs, the now dead man’s relatives received information that he had fallen from a bench in a friend’s yard.
When they arrived at the location, they saw Mayhilall lying on the ground. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mayhilall’s cause of death was given as blunt force trauma to the head and a fractured spine. Following investigations, the Police arrested and charged Persaud with the man’s death.
