– Eyewitness alleges

Brandishing a shotgun and shouting that he was ‘Gaza King’, a drunken watchman allegedly chased, shot and hacked Crabwood Creek, Corentyne resident Gowcharran Persaud on Saturday, December 16, before hiding his body in a canal.

The horrific tale was related to detectives by a man who is claiming that ‘Gaza King’ attacked them while, the eyewitness, Persaud, and ‘Gaza King’ were fishing.

Diligent investigation by detectives from Berbice and the Police Major Crimes Unit subsequently led to the discovery on Tuesday, December 19, of 37-year-old Gowcharran Persaud’s mutilated body, which was concealed under debris in a canal.

Big Smith News Watch understands that detectives also retrieved two shotgun casings from the scene.

Investigators have detained two men, including the prime suspect, who is a 29-year-old NDC watchman.

They are reportedly still to find the murder weapon.

The victim and suspects are from Crabwood Creek.

The alleged eyewitness, Amir Nazirulla, told police that he and Gowcharran Persaud, called ‘Satesh’, had gone to the Crabwood Creek backdam ‘link canal’ at around 10.00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, to fish.

They spent the night in the backdam, and were joined by a third man, identified as a 29-year-old NDC watchman.

Amir alleged that he and Gowcharran Persaud were fishing at around 9.00 a.m,  on Saturday, December 16, when the watchman, who had a shotgun and appeared to be drunk, approached them and said “he go kill all abi and that he name Gaza King.”

The alleged eyewitness said he heard about three loud explosions and he began to run to the backdam’s exit.

Dead: Gowcharran Persaud

As he fled, he claimed he heard Gowcharran Persaud scream. The alleged eyewitness said that he managed to flee on his motorcycle, which was parked about two hundred feet from the area they were fishing.

The man then made a report at the Springlands Police station.

Detectives from Berbice arrested the alleged shooter at his home, but failed to find the shotgun.

Police then escorted the suspect to the area where the men had been fishing, but found no trace of Gowcharran Persaud’s body.

They returned to the scene the following day and saw traces of blood and two empty shotgun cartridges.

At around 2.00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, they questioned two farmers, who told them that they had seen Gowcharran Persaud’s body.

The detectives eventually located Persaud’ corpse under a pile of debris in the Crabwood Creek ‘link canal, some 35 feet from where he was attacked.

The corpse bore what appeared to be gunshot wounds on the throat and back.

He had also been chopped to the neck.

A cousin of the slain man identified the body by tattoos on the victim’s left hand and face.

The body was then taken to the Bailey Funeral Home in West Coast Berbice.
