— Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand, on Tuesday conducted a walkthrough of the East Ruimveldt Market, engaging vendors and residents as part of ongoing efforts to advance rehabilitation of the facility.

During the visit, vendors raised concerns about several challenges affecting daily operations, including structural deterioration, sanitation and drainage issues, and the need for overall upgrades to improve safety and comfort.

Minister Manickchand assured stakeholders that their concerns are being taken seriously and are aligned with the Government’s wider programme to modernize markets nationwide.

The Minister underscored the importance of markets as vital economic hubs that provide livelihoods for hundreds of families while ensuring communities have access to fresh produce and essential goods. She noted that plans are already in place to rehabilitate the East Ruimveldt Market, with proposed works focusing on infrastructure improvements, enhanced sanitation facilities, improved drainage, and a more organized and resilient layout for vendors and customers.

The rehabilitation initiative forms part of the Government’s continued investment in strengthening municipal and community infrastructure, with an emphasis on upgrading public facilities and supporting small businesses.

Officials indicated that additional details on the scope of works and implementation timelines will be released as the project moves forward.
