ECD Families Receive New Core Homes

September 13, 2024 – Six families from the East Coast of Demerara are celebrating a new chapter in their lives after receiving keys to brand-new Core Homes.
These homes were provided under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP), funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The keys were officially handed over by the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, and Minister within the Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, alongside CHPA Deputy Director of Community Development, Mrs. Donell Bess-Bascom, and the engineering team.
The beneficiaries—Ms. Zillah Ramcharran of Hope, Ms. Sumintra Persaud of Lusignan, Ms. Kalowtie Sukdai of Good Hope, Ms. Julie Beckles of Mon Repos, Ms. Bhagwandai Samaroo of Mon Repos, and Ms. Michelle Moses of Pattenson—join a growing list of East Coast residents whose lives have been transformed by this initiative.
To date, 21 Core Homes have been handed over on the East Coast, contributing to the 127 completed under the AHUAP. Each home, valued at $5 million, features two bedrooms, a kitchen, and indoor sanitary facilities. Beneficiaries contributed $100,000 toward their new homes, with selections made during a previous application period.
Initially, the project’s reach only extended to La Bonne Intention, but it was expanded to include 19 additional communities, providing more families with the opportunity to become homeowners. Minister Croal emphasized that this expansion has allowed many more families on the lower East Coast to benefit from homeownership
