$12B to Further Improve Treated Water

January 3 2025 – The Ministry of Housing and Water has announced a landmark $12 billion contract signed with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to extend the Coastal Water Treatment Plan.
The announcement was made by Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, during the ministry’s Year-in-Review press conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Center earlier today.
The investment will fund the construction of five additional water treatment facilities, including four surface water treatment plants and two iron removal plants. This initiative is expected to benefit over 200,000 residents across coastal communities.
Minister Rodrigues confirmed that contracts for these large-scale water treatment plants have been signed and work is set to commence this month. These facilities will be implemented under the second phase of the Coastal Water Treatment Program, a critical step in enhancing the country’s water infrastructure.
Additionally, a strategic investment plan for the water sector, covering the years 2025 to 2028, has already been developed. This plan will address existing gaps in the water network and cater to the demands of the government’s expanding housing program.
The Ministry’s initiative underscores its commitment to improving water quality and access for Guyanese citizens, contributing to broader national development goals.
