Rose Hall youth gets full basketball Scholarship to D1 Morgan State University

Twenty-one-year-old Kevon Wiggins has etched his name in Guyanese basketball history, after signing with Division I [one] Morgan State University. Morgan State is a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) that competes at the highest level of competition in sports in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) in the United States.

Wiggins received a total of 6 scholarship offers after his stellar performance with Lamar Community College, a lower-ranking school in Colorado. He averaged 19.1 points per game while shooting 32.3% from the field in his second season with the team.

Signing with the school’s men’s team on Tuesday and speaking with this publication, the former Rose Hall Town resident expressed his belief that this opportunity will allow him to take his game to altitudes never before seen for Guyanese basketball players.

“I know that [playing in D1] will bring more experience and possible looks from NBA scouts, not just for myself, but even for young up and coming Guyanese players as well,” the young man explained.

Wiggins, who was also part of the Senior Men’s National Team that was able to capture the winning trophy at a Caribbean tournament in 2018, said that his selection shows the persistence and grit that he displayed and highlighted that if he can [acomplish this], anybody else can too.

“I never gave up, even when I hit rock bottom, by just working hard and being consistent. I was at a [Division 3 Junior College], and I worked my way up from there. This should show you that it’s not where you start, it’s your approach and how you finish,” he affirmed.

The recognition of Guyanese talent in the sport of basketball is expected to expand, with two other young men being awarded Junior College scholarships earlier in the year.
