Min Manickchand Urges Swift Action on City Cleanliness

September 29, 2025 – Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, met on Monday with Walter Narine, Director of Sanitation at the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), to address mounting concerns over the state of waste management in Georgetown.
The engagement followed a series of citizen complaints and widespread observations of poor sanitation across the capital. Mayor Alfred Mentore is currently out of the country.
Discussions focused on the challenges hampering sanitation services and the urgent need for effective, practical solutions. Minister Manickchand emphasized that keeping the city clean is a government priority, stressing that Georgetown must reflect the nation’s beauty, warmth, and hospitality.
“There is much room for improvement and little space for lengthy debates on the issue,” she stated. “We know what the issues are. Let’s get about working towards solutions that involve all stakeholders.”
Both the Ministry and the M&CC pledged to work together on sustainable strategies aimed at restoring pride in the city’s appearance and making communities cleaner, healthier, and more welcoming.
