The Minister within the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs met with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) today, September 30 at the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports Main Street office to formalize a way forward for the continued development of track and field in Guyana.

At the meeting, Minister Jacobs congratulated the AAG on their continued progress with track and field.

“I would like to congratulate you on the work you have been doing, it is commendable, and the work speaks for itself, but we are here to see how we can offer support from the Ministry,” Jacobs stated in his opening remarks to the AAG.

Jacobs lamented the Ministry’s commitment to track and field, noting that the Government of Guyana is fully behind the welfare of athletes in Guyana.

“We must have a clear pathway for the development of our athletes, but I also want to place heavy emphasis on the welfare of the athletes and how we can assist them going forward,” Jacobs stressed.

President of the AAG, Amanda Hermonstine congratulated Minister Jacobs on his appointment and highlighted Athletics continued progress and relationship with the government and the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“I want to congratulate you on your appointment as Minister and to highlight the support we have received from the Sports Commission and the Ministry and to say that I know our relationship with you will be no different as well,” Hermostine stated.

Additionally, Secretary of the AAG’s developmental committee, Debbie Hopkinson noted comprehensive research on track and field in athletics revealed interesting findings that Minister Jacobs was intrigued about.

Nevertheless, Jacobs deemed the meeting highly successful and challenged the AAG to develop a marketing strategy for their athletes to gain more corporate support that will tie into the assistance by the Government of Guyana.

The AAG also presented Minister Jacobs with a plaque of appreciation to bring the curtains down on the meeting.
