Yarrowkabra Regional Food Hub set to boost storage and agricultural exports

Guyana’s agricultural sector is set to gain greater storage and export capacity with the construction of the Regional Food Hub at Yarrowkabra, which is expected to be completed within the next four weeks.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, who recently inspected the project, said the facility will play a key role in improving the way fresh produce is stored, handled and prepared for regional markets.

The minister said construction is progressing according to schedule and is expected to be completed within the contractual timeframe. Once the building is handed over, US-based Blumberg Grains will install the facility’s modern cold-storage systems.

The Regional Food Hub is expected to provide farmers with additional capacity to store perishable commodities, helping to reduce losses while creating a more reliable supply of fresh produce for both domestic and regional markets.

Mustapha said the investment will also strengthen Guyana’s ability to supply agricultural commodities to other CARICOM countries, supporting the country’s wider push to expand food production and exports.

The facility forms part of Guyana’s contribution to the region’s 25 by 2025+5 initiative, which aims to reduce CARICOM’s food import bill by 25 per cent by 2030.

The minister said investments such as the Yarrowkabra hub are critical to ensuring Guyana can make a meaningful contribution to that regional target while strengthening its own agricultural sector.
