Prime Minister visits border troops amid regional tensions

January 3 2025
Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, is currently in Region One engaging ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) deployed in border communities, as concerns intensify over recent developments in neighbouring Venezuela.

The visit comes amid heightened regional and international attention following reports of escalating military activity in Venezuela.

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that U.S. forces carried out a “large-scale” strike and captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Meanwhile earlier today, President Dr Irfaan Ali convened an early-morning meeting with the Defence Board, members of the national security architecture, regional commanders, and other senior security officials to assess the evolving situation and its potential implications for Guyana.
Authorities have indicated that Guyana’s security agencies remain on high alert, with continuous monitoring of developments to ensure the country’s territorial integrity and national security.
