A 35-year-old man from La Jalousie is in police custody after being found in possession of cannabis during a routine traffic stop, which later led to the discovery of a larger stash at his residence.

The suspect, identified as Sayeed Salul of Gap Road, La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, was intercepted by police around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, during a traffic operation in front of the Den Amstel Police Station. He was traveling as the sole passenger in a Toyota Fielder Wagon driven by a 34-year-old man from Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
According to police, officers detected a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, prompting a search of both occupants. A bulky plastic bag containing suspected cannabis was found on Salul. Upon weighing, it amounted to 30 grams.
Following the initial discovery, officers conducted a search of Salul’s home, where they uncovered several ziplock bags of suspected cannabis hidden inside a chester drawer. That stash was later weighed and amounted to 482 grams.
When informed of the offence, Salul reportedly admitted, “Sir, I does hustle da lil weed.”
He was subsequently taken to the Leonora Police Station along with the suspected narcotics. The total quantity seized from both the traffic stop and the home search is 512 grams.
Salul remains in custody as police continue their investigation and prepare to lay charges.
