Man serving 45 years for sexual activity with 5-Y-O girl files appeal

A man convicted in 2018 of engaging in sexual activity with a five-year-old girl and jailed for 45 years, has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal’s Kingston, Georgetown courthouse.
Omadat Persaud called “Roshi” was found guilty by a jury of engaging in sexual activity with the child on two occasions between July 1 and 31, 2015.
He must serve 35 years before being eligible for parole.
Trial Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall in sentencing the convict had taken into account the serious nature of the offence, that Persaud violated a position of trust, and that the act involved penetration along with the prevalence of sexual offences against children in Guyana.
The appellate court led by acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards recently completed hearing arguments in the case and has reserved its judgement which is likely to be handed down later in the year.
