Gold Miner killed during altercation at Cuyuni Backdam

A 32-year-old gold miner was shot and killed during an altercation at Sands Backdam, Cuyuni River, on Monday morning.

Dead is Ceton Courtman of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.

According to police, the incident reportedly occurred at about 11:50 hrs and involved Courtman and a 27-year-old security guard employed by a private security company.

According to preliminary information, the two men became involved in an argument during which the security guard allegedly discharged a firearm, striking Courtman to the head.

Courtman was rushed to the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM) Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An examination of the body revealed a circular wound to the centre of the head, consistent with a gunshot injury.

The security guard has since been detained as investigations continue. A Taurus .32 pistol and twelve matching rounds of ammunition were recovered following the incident.

Courtman’s body is expected to be transported to Bartica before being taken to Memorial Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
