Lorry Driver on Bail Over Water Street Fatal Accident

November 26 2024 – Several months after a tragic accident claimed the life of 63-year-old pedestrian Doreen Haynes, 45-year-old Michael Hopkinson of Coverden, East Bank Demerara (EBD), has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Hopkinson appeared before Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court last week Friday, where the charge was formally read to him.
It is alleged that on April 15, 2024, he drove a motor vehicle dangerously, resulting in the death of Haynes. Hopkinson pleaded not guilty and was released on $300,000 bail.
He is scheduled to return to court on February 7, 2025.
According to reports, the incident occurred along Water Street, Georgetown. Hopkinson was reportedly operating an unregistered motor lorry, traveling south when he attempted to overtake a stationary motor lorry.
During the maneuver, the rear left section of his vehicle struck Haynes, who was speaking with the lorry’s driver. The impact pinned her between the two vehicles, causing her to fall onto the roadway.
Haynes was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) but later succumbed to her injuries.
At the time of her demise, Haynes worked as a security officer and resided at Diamond, EBD.
