GPF Warns public of fake traffic fine scam

The Guyana Police Force is warning members of the public about a fraudulent traffic fine scam involving fake text messages purporting to be official notices from the Force.

According to the GPF, the messages falsely claim that recipients have outstanding traffic fines and threaten legal action, financial penalties or court proceedings unless payment is made within a specified period.

Recipients are then directed to a fraudulent website and encouraged to provide personal and financial information.

The Police Force has stressed that the messages are not authentic and did not originate from the GPF.

Members of the public are urged not to click on suspicious links contained in unsolicited text messages or enter personal, banking or payment information on unverified websites.

The GPF said traffic fines should only be verified or paid through its official online portal. The Force also reminded the public that payments are made through MMG and not through a card payment system, as promoted by the scam.

Persons who receive the fraudulent messages are advised to delete them immediately, report them to the Guyana Police Force and warn family members and friends, particularly elderly and vulnerable persons who may be targeted.

The GPF said it is actively investigating the scam and working with relevant authorities to identify those responsible.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant as authorities continue efforts to combat cyber-enabled fraud and online scams.
