Police ranks conducting a cordon and search operation at Friendship, East Coast Demerara, on Tuesday evening recovered a suspected handgun after a man fled the area and discarded a bag containing the weapon.

The operation was reportedly carried out at Watson Street, Friendship ECD.

Reports indicate that an identifiable male of African descent was spotted running from the area upon the ranks’ arrival.

During his escape, the suspect allegedly dropped a bulky plastic bag onto the roadway before disappearing.

The bag was retrieved and searched, leading to the discovery of a pistol without ammunition in the chamber.

Investigators later examined the firearm and found that its serial number appeared to have been filed off, while the make and model were unidentifiable due to the weapon’s condition.

The firearm was taken to the Vigilance Police Station, where it was processed for fingerprints, photographed, marked, and lodged as evidence.

Police conducted checks in the area for the fleeing suspect, but he was not found.
