GPA calls for better President/ media relationship in congrats message

September 08, 2025
The Guyana Press Association on Monday offered congratulatory greetings to His Excellency President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and his government on their return to office. The greeting was, however, accompanied by some reminders and observations.
The GPA expressed the hope that relationships between the government and the media can improve as the months and years flow by. The need for access to and timely information sharing, as well as respect for the work of journalists, was also noted in the greetings to President Ali.
In fact, the elected officials on both sides of the political aisle making themselves accessible and available to the media is something the GPA hopes can be the order of the day. Matters which have implications for the media and the work of the press are something that the GPA believes should be done in a way where discussions with the media and the Press Association should be had.
“It should be reminded that the media has a key role to play in today’s society, and it cannot be one reduced to hostility,” The Press Association release noted.
The Guyana Press Association spoke to two instances, one of an exchange between President Ali and a television Journalist and one between Social Media Commentator Mikel Rodrigues and another journalist. The GPA described the exchanges as attacks on the media operatives and condemned them.
The Guyana Press Association will continue to call on ALL politicians to respect journalists and their work
