Defence Headquarters crowned GDF Athletics champs

Defence Headquarters (DHQ) marched easily to the 2025 Guyana Defence Force Athletics championship crown when the 4-day event concluded on Friday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.

It was nothing but smooth sailing for DHQ, amassing 532 points to finish clearly ahead of their closest competitors in the Coast Guards who sailing some distance behind on 358 points.

Akeem Stewart of DHQ edges out the competition to win the men’s 200m.

Third place when to First Infantry with 245.5 points while Third Infantry finished fourth at 235.5 points. Rounding out the top five was Base Camp Ayanganna (BCA) who fell from second on the second day of the event to finish on 220 points.

31st Special Forces Squadron and 21st Artillery Company managed to finish sixth on 199 points while the Training Corp moved up from the bottom of the totem pole to seventh on 172 points.

Kenisha Phillips comfortably wins the women’s 200m.

Base Camp Stephenson (BCS) copped the eighth position with 166 points while the Guyana National Reserve strolled in at ninth on 153 points. Fourth Engineer Battalion who were locked in a heated battle for fourth on the second day of the event, fell all the way to the 10th and final spot with 133 points.

The competition concluded on Friday, but the GDF will now have a tall task to prepare their team for the Joint Services Championships that is scheduled for November.
