Construction Worker Remanded Over Armed Robbery

January 16 2025- A 23-year-old construction worker, Marlon Rodrigues, of Perry Street, Guyhoc Park,
Georgetown, was remanded to prison on Wednesday after being charged with robbery under
arms.
The charge was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Georgetown
Magistrates’ Courts.
The prosecution alleges that Rodrigues, armed with a knife, robbed Rupnarine Kurpaul of a
cellphone valued at $34,000 on January 13, 2025, at Commerce Street, Georgetown.
Rodrigues, who appeared without legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
During the proceedings, the police prosecutor opposed bail, citing the serious nature and rising
prevalence of armed robberies, as well as the severe penalties associated with such offences.
The court was told that Kurpaul had been walking along Commerce Street around 5:00 PM
when he was confronted by Rodrigues, who forcibly took his cellphone.
Kurpaul raised an alarm, prompting nearby citizens to give chase. A police officer on duty
observed the commotion and intercepted Rodrigues. Upon conducting a search, the officer
reportedly recovered both the stolen cellphone and the knife allegedly used in the robbery.
Kurpaul later positively identified Rodrigues and the retrieved items at the police station.
After considering the prosecutor’s arguments, Magistrate Mc Gusty denied bail and ordered
that Rodrigues remain in custody. The case has been adjourned to February 5, 2025, for further
proceedings.
