What you should know of the traffic flow as the DHB is down

It will take hours if not days before engineers working on the Demerara Harbour Bridge can allow traffic to traverse the structure, nevertheless, once that happens, the weight restrictions on the bridge will be keenly monitored.

The Engineers are looking at 48 to 72 hours before the bridge is able to accommodate its first set of traffic. This is so because of the magnitude of work that has to be done at the facility.

What is important to note, however, is that the government has also engaged the Maritime Administration Department to facilitate barges taking vehicular traffic between Stabroek and Vreed-En-Hoop. This is mainly to ensure that there is no standstill in commerce between communities to the West of the bridge and Georgetown. Persons are asked to keep checking with the Ministry of Public Works for these updates, Further to that, Water Taxis started traversing around 04:00hrs this morning after the bridge collision.

With respect to the East Bank Demerara Traffic, those persons who have opted not to use the barges to transit the river, for access to either side, are advised that parking facilities have been made available on the Guyana National Stadium tarmac and the Parking lot between the Stadium and Princess Hotel.

Motorists are reminded that there is also the option of using the Eccles and Mocha road links to get onto the East bank Demerara beyond the Harbour and to head into Georgetown

This move became necessary in an effort to remove any buildup of traffic along the East Bank Demerara on either end, especially in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge. At the moment, there are no vehicles in the approach and pathway to the Harbour Bridge on the East Side. This allows for the movement of heavy-duty equipment and machinery which will need to access the eastern end of the bridge in support of the ongoing works.
