Government working to restore Guyana-Suriname Ferry Service

The Government of Guyana says it remains in daily contact with Surinamese authorities as efforts continue to resolve the suspension of the Guyana-Suriname ferry service.
In a statement issued on August 25, the Government said officials from both countries have been in constant communication since the suspension, with the aim of restoring operations as soon as possible.
The Government reiterated that responsibility for the maintenance and drydocking of the M.V. Canawaima rests with Suriname. Two technical inspections were recently conducted by maritime experts from Guyana and Suriname, with both teams concluding that the vessel could remain in operation until it enters drydock within the next three months.
However, despite those assessments being provided in writing, the Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) has maintained that certain matters which were expected to be addressed during drydocking must be dealt with immediately.
Guyana has maintained that passenger safety remains the priority but acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the suspension. The Government said a proposal to use an alternative vessel was rejected by MAS, but another vessel is now being considered for submission to the Surinamese authorities.
At the same time, discussions with MAS are continuing in an effort to have the existing ferry service resume, even on a short-term basis.
Meanwhile, immigration services remain available to persons travelling between Guyana and Suriname by small boats. Passengers departing Guyana must report to the Immigration Office at the Moleson Creek Terminal for processing, while those arriving in Suriname are required to report to the Immigration Office in New Nickerie.
Persons departing Suriname by small boat must also report to the relevant immigration offices before leaving the country.
The Government said it is pursuing all available options to restore the ferry service and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding while efforts continue.
