Junior Basant Elected as New Chairman of Region Six

Junior Basant has been elected unopposed as the new Chairman of the Region Six (East Berbice–Corentyne) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), succeeding long-serving Chairman David Armogan, who held the position for more than 13 years.

The election and swearing-in ceremony were held on Friday in the presence of Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha and Member of Parliament Zamal Hussain. The oath of office was administered by Regional Executive Officer and Clerk of Council, Narindra Persaud, to 30 councillors representing the various political parties.

In his remarks following the election, Basant expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and pledged to serve the people of Region Six with commitment and integrity.
“I look forward to the next five years. I anticipate it to be a challenging one, and I know I’m capable enough to take on this challenge and work for the best interest of these people,” Basant stated.
Elected as Vice Chairman was Wajid Saheed Khan, who also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve. He called on his fellow councillors to work collectively to advance the region’s development.
“I am honoured to serve this council. I encourage this RDC council of 2025 to let us work together to make a difference in the region serving the people,” Khan said.

The council also agreed that its statutory meetings will continue to be held on the first Thursday of every month, with the first session scheduled for November 6, 2025.
