CHPA, GPL Move to Resolve Delays on Access Road

The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) have moved to advance work on the GPL Access Road Project following a joint technical visit to the construction site on Tuesday.

Chief Executive Officer of CHPA, Dr. Martin Pertab, led the on-site engagement alongside Team Leader of the Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall; Divisional Director of Engineering Services, Ryan Ross; CHPA engineers; and technical representatives from GPL.

The visit focused on coordinating ongoing works along the main access route and resolving outstanding technical and logistical challenges that have affected progress.

During the engagement, the teams reviewed construction sequencing, addressed areas of delay, and held discussions with contractors and other key agencies involved in the project. Particular attention was placed on aligning road construction with GPLโ€™s plans to install power lines along the corridor, as completion of the roadway is essential to the expansion of electricity infrastructure.

CHPA and GPL have been collaborating over the past several months to keep the project on schedule. As part of the latest visit, unresolved issues were clarified and measures were agreed upon to improve efficiency and maintain steady progress.

The GPL Access Road Project spans 12 lots, extending from the East Bank of Demerara to Mahaica, with each lot covering approximately four kilometres of carriageway. When completed, the road will connect South Ruimveldt to the GPL substation at Columbia, Mahaica, improving access and supporting electricity distribution across East Coast and East Bank Demerara in Region Four.

Dr. Pertab confirmed that engagements are ongoing with persons whose properties are affected by the project. He noted that discussions are also being held with agencies such as the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) to address related concerns, including matters involving farmers along the corridor.

The GPL Access Road Project, valued at approximately $5.58 billion, remains under construction and forms part of the governmentโ€™s broader infrastructure programme aimed at enhancing access to electricity and supporting sustainable development in Region Four.
