June 25 2026
The International Building Expo 2026 officially opened on Thursday evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with hundreds of exhibitors, vibrant cultural performances and strong messages of confidence in Guyana’s continued transformation.
Held under the theme, “Guyana at 60: Building Strong Foundations for a Sustainable Future,” this year’s expo has attracted more than 500 exhibitors, making it one of the largest editions to date.
The opening ceremony featured energetic performances by local artistes including Carlvin Burnette and Ben Parag and other dance groups, setting an upbeat tone for the four-day event.
Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Dr. Martin Pertab, said Guyana has become a vision of development and that the expo provides an opportunity to showcase the country’s rapid progress. He highlighted homeownership as a powerful tool for wealth creation and pointed to the many achievements within the housing sector, noting that several major infrastructure programmes remain in the pipeline.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Vanessa Benn, said President Dr. Irfaan Ali laid much of the foundation for the growth and direction now being witnessed in the sector during his tenure as Minister of Housing.
She stressed that development must be coordinated and that government continues to work assiduously to ensure progress across every sector.
Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal described the expo as a platform that demonstrates how far Guyana has come as a nation and showcases innovation in housing and construction.
He noted that the housing sector’s transformation extends beyond the distribution of house lots, with efforts focused on meeting the growing demand for affordable housing through a modern and responsive approach.
He also highlighted collaboration among government agencies to improve efficiency and timeliness.
Minister Croal said the International Building Expo has evolved into the country’s premier housing and construction showcase, bringing together engineers, contractors, suppliers, financial institutions and other key stakeholders under one roof.
Special guest, Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness, praised the changes that have taken place in Guyana since his last visit eight years ago.
He said Guyana is moving and growing at an incredibly fast pace and underscored the importance of successful housing initiatives in supporting national development.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali said interest in homeownership continues to rise, noting that more than 67,000 applications have been received since 2020, the majority from young people.
He disclosed that approximately 30,000 titles have been processed between 2020 and 2026 and observed a growing shift towards home construction rather than simply acquiring land.
The President also highlighted increased lending for homeownership and emphasised the importance of road infrastructure in supporting new communities.
He stressed that the government is not just constructing buildings and roads, but also building a nation, President Ali said, while outlining government’s efforts to modernise laws, strengthen democratic institutions and foster greater national unity.
He assured that Guyana’s economy remains strong and positioned for continued growth.
The International Building Expo 2026 continues through the weekend, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the latest developments in housing, construction, technology and sustainable living.
