The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the death of 16-year-old Aftaz King of Eliza Mary Race Course, Corentyne, Berbice, who died earlier this evening following an incident involving a police patrol.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, the incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m. along the Princeton Access Road, Corentyne.

Preliminary enquiries indicate that King was riding motorcycle CL 5607 when he allegedly attempted to evade a police patrol, lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a utility pole.

The teenager sustained injuries and was taken to the No. 75 Regional Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

The OPR said its investigation will examine all aspects of the incident to determine whether there was any criminal or disciplinary culpability.

The Guyana Police Force acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured King’s relatives and the public that appropriate action would be taken if any wrongdoing is established.

Investigations remain ongoing.
