A serviceman from the North West District has died following a fatal industrial incident at Morwa Backdam, Cuyuni River, on Tuesday afternoon.

Dead is Dillon Tobin of Manawarin Village, Moruca, North West District.

Police said the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on July 14, 2026, during a mining operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 47-year-old excavator operator was operating a Doosan 225 excavator when Tobin, who was seated on the machine, was struck by a tree branch that reportedly recoiled.

The impact caused Tobin to fall from the excavator. Police said the operator immediately rendered assistance, but Tobin later became motionless.

His body is currently at the mining camp, while police ranks are making their way to the area to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
