Woman dies in bungee jump safety failure in Brazil

A 21-year-old woman has died following a tragic bungee jumping accident in São Paulo State, Brazil, after an apparent safety failure during an extreme sports excursion on Saturday, June 13.

The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was participating in a rope-jumping activity from the well-known “Skeleton Bridge” (Ponte do Esqueleto) in the municipality of Limeira when she fell approximately 40 metres (131 feet) to the ground. Witnesses and preliminary reports indicate that the safety cord was allegedly not attached before she was launched from the platform.

According to Brazilian media reports and statements provided to authorities, de Freitas had purchased the jump as part of a guided adventure package. Video footage circulating on social media reportedly captured the moments before the incident, with witnesses realizing that the safety rope had been left unsecured after she had already been released. Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene; however, she was pronounced dead upon arrival due to the severity of her injuries.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over safety protocols within Brazil’s adventure tourism sector. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
