Seven persons homeless following devastating Sophia fire

Seven people have been left homeless after a fire destroyed three buildings and severely damaged another at North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to the Guyana Fire Service, firefighters arrived at the scene to find a motorcycle completely destroyed, one building fully engulfed in flames, and nearby structures under threat from the spreading fire.
Emergency crews quickly launched firefighting, rescue, and recovery operations, deploying three water tenders to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Preliminary investigations have determined that the fire was maliciously set by an unknown person or persons. Investigators said the fire originated from the motorcycle before spreading to the surrounding buildings.
The Guyana Fire Service has since launched an investigation into the incident.
