First batch of Mocha squatters relocated

The first batch of informal settlers from Arcadia, Mocha on the East Bank of Demerara has begun transitioning from squatting on a road reserve and unregularised lands to officially allocated house lots within their community.
Residents who previously occupied sections of Fields 1–3 along a road reserve, as well as squatters from Fields 4–6, have received government-approved house lot allocations, marking a significant step toward improved and legal housing.
The Ministry of Housing and Water recently regularised portions of Fields 1–3 after acquiring the land from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). As part of ongoing development efforts, construction has commenced on a new access road, with authorities also working to ensure proper infrastructure and access to essential utilities for residents in the area.
Approximately 21 persons who were occupying the section earmarked for road construction are being relocated to vacant lots within Fields 1–3. In addition, about 50 informal settlers from Fields 4–6—areas not slated for regularisation—are also being moved to available house lots in the same community.
The Housing Ministry has invited the first 17 beneficiaries to begin the allocation process and commended them for their cooperation throughout the relocation exercise, despite reported attempts by political figures to discourage their participation.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude following the allocation, noting that the move represents a major improvement in their living conditions and offers greater stability and opportunity for their families.
The relocation process is expected to continue as authorities work toward resolving long-standing squatting issues and improving housing conditions in Mocha.
