Santa Rose receives their championship trophy from the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne-Shadeek

Santa Rose Primary School pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win against Waramuri Primary to claim the 2025 MVP Sports under-11 girls’ Pee-Wee Football title on Saturday evening at the Ministry of Education ground.

The final played between two Region One primary schools was nothing short of spectacular with the Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek in attendance.

Santa Rose struck first with a strike from Rovena Johnson in the 12th minute to take the early advantage in the game that started tensely between the two regional rivals.  Atia Marks then equalized for Waramuri to close the first half 1-1 between the two sides.

Some of the action between Santa Rosa (purple) and Waramuri during the highly contested final.

Henry got the ball rolling for Santa Rosa in the 28th minute with a brilliant right footed shot to rock the back of the net. Two minutes later Johnson would score her second goal of the game in the 30th to give Santa Rosa a 3-1 advantage.

In the wanning minutes of the game Marks gave Waramuri some hope with a penalty in the 39th minute but even the desperate efforts late in the game by Waramuri could not be enough as Santa Rosa held on until the final whistle to be crowned as champs.

Earlier, Marian Academy secured the third pace finish with a 1-nil win over St. John the Baptist Primary with Haley Haberkorn scoring the game’s lone goal in the 21st minute.

Johnson was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 19 total goals in the tournament.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs during her remarks at the closing ceremony of the tournament lauded the efforts of both schools, noting that the performance indicates what hinterland communities can achieve once the have the same opportunities as coast landers.
