A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for the 2022 killing of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Loretha Simon.

She was fatally stabbed at her mother’s Sophia, Greater Georgetown home.

Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif began sentencing at 30 years but deducted time for the man’s early guilty plea, as well as other aggravating and mitigating factors, before arriving at the final sentence.

The convict, Terrence Thomas, called ‘Oosh’, had earlier pleaded guilty to the capital offence when he appeared before the High Court in Demerara.

According to the facts presented by State prosecutor Darin Chan, the brutal killing occurred just after midday on Thursday, January 27, 2022.

Simon, who was pregnant at the time, had gone to visit her mother and was preparing to cook a meal when Thomas attacked.

He stabbed her multiple times in the presence of her nine-year-old sister before fleeing the scene, abandoning the murder weapon.

The shocking crime, which claimed the life of the young mother-to-be, left the Sophia community reeling and sparked widespread outrage.
