GECOM Urges Public to Scrutinize Revised List of Electors

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has confirmed the discovery of a registration discrepancy in the Revised List of Electors (RLE) and is encouraging the public to closely examine the list, which remains on display nationwide until July 29.

According to a statement issued by GECOM, the irregularity involved an unauthorized registration transaction carried out by an individual using the credentials of a legitimate registrant. The incident, which occurred at one of the Commission’s registration offices, involved the processing of a replacement ID card and a change of address—both without the knowledge or consent of the registered elector.

An internal investigation found that staff at the registration office failed to follow standard operating procedures. The individual responsible for processing the transaction could not offer a satisfactory explanation for his actions. As a result, the Chief Election Officer ordered the reversal of the transaction. The ID card that was produced was never issued and remains in GECOM’s possession; it will be destroyed.

GECOM said the matter has since been referred to the Police for further investigation to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

The Commission acknowledged that two erroneous transactions were completed and stressed that such mistakes could have been avoided if established procedures had been followed. GECOM has since launched an internal review aimed at preventing a recurrence.

In light of this, GECOM is urging citizens to review the RLE to ensure the accuracy of their personal information. The list is available for scrutiny at two prominent locations in each registration division and sub-division, as well as on the Commission’s official website. Any discrepancies should be reported immediately to the relevant registration office.

GECOM reiterated its commitment to a transparent, credible, and law-abiding registration process. It assured the public that all transactions are monitored by representatives of parliamentary political parties and that mechanisms remain in place to maintain the integrity of the electoral system.
