Venezuelan National to be charged with 9 Counts of Trafficking in Persons.

Mayelin Cordova 41, a Venezuelan National of Byderabo Road, Bartica, Region 7, who is presently serving a 6 months prison sentence for operating a brothel, is to be further charged by the Trafficking in Persons Unit (TIP), with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons, Contrary to Section 3 (1) (i) of the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act.

 

Cordova between 15th March, 2023 and 30th April, 2023 trafficked nine Venezuelan females from Venezuela to Guyana and exploited them between Crusher Hill and Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni Mazaruni River, Region 7.

 

The victims reported the matter to the Guyana Police Force, and members of the Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters conducted an investigation.

 

Based on the investigation, legal advice was given by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for Cordova to be charged with the offences.

 

The Guyana Police Force’s TIP Unit in efforts to combat Trafficking in Persons, will continue to work with other stakeholders to conduct intelligence-led operations, spot inspections, awareness, and training in every region of Guyana.
