VP Jagdeo Pledges Universal Secondary Education in Guyana

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Guyana’s education system, announcing that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon be integrated to support individualised learning and deliver world-class education for all students.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Dr. Jagdeo outlined bold plans to achieve universal secondary education in the coming years, underpinned by significant investments in school infrastructure and modern learning technologies.

“We are giving every child the opportunity to succeed,” the Vice President said, underscoring the administration’s drive to make secondary education accessible to every Guyanese student.

Jagdeo pointed out that the government’s initiatives—such as constructing new secondary schools across the country and incentivising private education—are already paying off. He noted that this year, every student who sat the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) will go on to write the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, regardless of their performance at the primary level.

He stated that all of the students who took the NGSA this year—whether they achieved 50% or less—will be able to write the CXC exams by the time they are ready, noting that the investments already made will make this possible.

He further explained that a key focus is ensuring students in every region have access to adequate secondary school facilities, with AI tools playing a critical role in enhancing the learning experience and tailoring education to the needs of individual students.

The push toward universal secondary education aligns with the government’s broader strategy to modernise education, bridge regional disparities, and prepare young Guyanese for success in an increasingly digital world.
