Couple Remanded After Cocaine and Marijuana Found in Essequibo Home

A husband and wife from Good Hope, Essequibo Coast, were arrested and later remanded to prison following the discovery of cocaine and marijuana at their residence during a police operation on Thursday, June 27, 2025.
According to a police report the operation was conducted at approximately 14:17 hrs after police ranks acted on information received and visited the home of 56-year-old Shameena Budhoo.
Upon arrival, the ranks informed Budhoo that a search would be conducted for firearms, ammunition, and narcotics. Her husband, Otis Gouveia, was present at the time and accompanied officers during the search of the bottom flat of the house.
During the search, police lifted a floor carpet and discovered a plastic bag containing 76 foil-wrapped pieces of a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine. Officers also uncovered four small bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems believed to be cannabis.
Further searches yielded three battery-operated scales, six mobile phones (three Samsung and three BLU), a smoking utensil, two cigarette lighters, and $9,790 in local currency.
The couple was arrested and taken to the Aurora Police Station, along with the seized items. The suspected narcotics were weighed, confirming 15.1 grams of cocaine and 4.3 grams of cannabis.
The suspects were charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and appeared before the court today, where they were remanded to prison pending further legal proceedings. Investigations are ongoing.
